Over the long weekend in May I had the pleasure of racing a NASCAR at the Daytona 500 oval in Daytona Beach. When I initially saw the two and half mile oval I wondered what had possessed me to race a car around a steep track at 145 mph. I had a funny feeling in my stomach that I do not want to describe here.

Once strapped into this rocket sled, I was asked if I had any questions. I asked where the radio and air conditioning was as I was really hot in my fire suit and the cool response I received from the girl who was part of the pit crew was “obviously you’ve never done this before”. Her advice to me was that I had to be at 100 mph prior to the end of pit row otherwise I would never make it past the 38-degree embankment that would face me. It was one hell of a motivational speech and needless to say it terrified me.

I followed the pace car in front of me, as he would guide me for the next 18 laps. I can only describe this as one of the most thrilling experiences I have ever had. My computer print out told me that I did 153 mph and I can tell you the noise the smell of the fuel the cheering crowd (well my wife and kids) made this a lifetime memory which I highly recommend .

So why did I do it? I suppose the best way to answer that would be to describe it with a few metaphors that we all face in life and I share these with you:
  • Get off to a good start… this applies to whatever you do
  • Focus forward on where you are going…don’t look back
  • Accelerate in turns - don’t let anything slow you down…always stay focused and follow your plan
  • Go around those who get in your way - don’t let them slow you down
  • Have fun and enjoy the ride
  • Celebrate the achievement when you finish
The latter could not be truer. I was happy I was still alive!!!
